Margaret Harmer and I have known each other for a long time. We went to high school together, Margaret made music and I did visual arts.
Margaret is a percussionist, performer, music producer, music teacher and an activist. She opened her music studio Shiftingwaves in 2012 where she produces and mixes records. She has released 2 fabulous ambient music albums, meditation sound works and many other projects. She has played percussion with different classical, contemporary and early music ensembles and orchestras. One of her favorite passions is field recording which she studied with Chris Watson.
In September 2017 we got together with the idea to create a live electronic music show. Margaret has been working on her live set for many years now bringing different acoustic instruments and analog elements together like the luminist garden by Folktek, Moog and 0-Coast synthesizers or the AFrame, a DSP frame drum. I use sound loops and vocal snippets that I have pre-recorded which I play on a keyboard along with my voice, transforming all of these in real time with fx modulations. Electronic music and live performance is a way to play and experiment with music and sounds, to see how far we can push our limits and our creativity. Creating this performance was also a way to get out of our comfort zone, try something new, fresh and bold. And guess what: we are having a blast and making great music!
One year later, we did our first live performance “Us Asleep Awake” in an open airfield near Geneva. It mixes vocals, acoustic instruments, analog sounds with some pre-recorded loops and digitally designed instruments. It brings together hypnosis trance texts, song lyrics and live scats, the entire performance has lots of room for improvisation. We decided to wear our Raw and Radical t-shirts because we genuinely believe in this message.
